13/8/02 - Barnards Green
finish on a high
BARNARDS
GREEN v HIGHLEY Rich Williams won the toss and elected to bat in blustery
conditions on a bouncy lively looking pitch. The Green lost Brian Hancock
early when a delivery rose sharply and hit him on the thumb and he was unable
to continue. Rich Williams was trapped leg before first ball and the Green
looked in all sorts of trouble. Jeremy Clarke batted with new found confidence and started a
counter attack against Highley's opening attack, striking shots all round the
wicket. Kevin Golder provided excellent support and the pair took the score
to 87 until Golder was run out by a direct hit. Chris Hill and Clarke
continued to pile up the runs. Clarke later fell leg before for a fine 70. Jack Wheeler then joined Hill and struck a quick fire 39 with
one 6 and seven 4s. This provided the Green with the perfect injection of
quick runs. Wickets then fell regularly but Chris Hill (60no) was able to see
the Green through to a highly competitive 250-8. Highley's reply started disastrously with Tim Williams removing
three of the top four batsmen, including the very dangerous Humphries, thanks
to a sharp Glendinning stumping. Scullion, in the middle of another excellent spell, finally got
his reward when Unit was given lbw. Highley then provided some resistance,
but this was broken by the spin duo of Clarke and Hill who both picked up
valuable wickets. Williams then bowled Wall and Scullion picked up the last two
wickets with only five balls to spare. Scullion finished with 3-37 and
Williams 4-42. The Green finished the season on a high with 24 points and two
wins in succession. |
30/8/02 - Green slip to
defeat on wet wicket
BELBROUGHTON
II v BARNARDS GREEN II G Ross made a bright start to the Belbroughton innings hitting a
succession of boundaries behind square on the leg side as the bowlers
struggled to find the line. First change bowler Jamie Longmore drew him into a rash stroke
to bowl him for 42 and then Phil Spencer used his experience to great effect,
tempting T Oliver with a slower ball and then pushing the next one through
much quicker to force a simple nick to keeper Rich Birch. P Ross accumulated
runs steadily reaching 42 before smacking the ball to Jamie Longmore who took
an excellent catch at long off. In the scramble for quick runs in the last few overs the Green's
fielding wilted under the pressure allowing Belbroughton to post a total of
188 in their 40 overs. In reply the Green made an uncertain start as Matt Brookes
flicked a simple catch to square leg and John Sherliker was run out after
slipping on the wet wicket. Paul Yorke and Andy Wheeler each hit some
confident boundaries but Raybould and Edwards used the conditions well to
cause problems for both batsmen. Three wickets then fell quickly as the unpredictable bounce
induced false shots and Alex Lamb dropped his bat and watched bemused as the
slip fielder threw down his wicket. Phil Spencer (46) and Dick Brown (32) came together with the
score on 56-5 and immediately showed that they still thought victory was
within reach adding 80 runs in quick time. Oliver took an excellent running catch to dismiss Spencer
leaving Derek Goodman with the tail enders. Despite his efforts the Green
ended up 27 runs short. 6/9/02 Green Vs St Johns Ladywood On saturday, a mixed Barnards Green team
entertained St Johns Ladywood from the Birmingham area on an excellent track
at Newlands. Electing to bat first, the Green got off to a steady start
against some hostile bowling from opener Ali. Paul Yorke decided to go
on the offensive and played some glorious straight drives, before being
caught for 19. Dave Bayliss continued to graft but was then bowled for
10. John Sherliker soon fell to the dangerous Khytab, but Rob Lewis
(21) and Tim Price batted sensibly to build a total before Lewis fell to a
simple catch. Bob Rogers joined Tim and between them they started to
find the boundaries that were required before Price perished for 38.
Bob got little support until the arrival of number 11 Jamie Longmore
and between them they took the score to a respectable 205 off their allotted
overs ROGERS finished on 71 no and Longmore on 14 no. Courtesy ot the Malvern Gazette |
