Bretforton vs Barnards Green 2nd XI

Skipper Andy Lamb chose to bat on a bouncy track at Bretforton, but his first three made 13 between them in a particularly sluggish start. Paul Jones bowled 9 tight overs for 9 runs. Jon Lewis (24) stayed becalmed for long spells between the odd lofted drive for 4, while Chris Hill arrived at No. 5 and seemed for a while to be imitating a skittish No.11. Just after Lewis lofted one too many to mid-on, heavy rain descended and brought early tea at 72-4 with 23 overs gone.

An hour later, with the match reduced to 40 overs each, Sam Beaumont and Marek Wajzer made little progress and were both bowled. Hill, now returned to normal batting, could only stand as non-striker and admire John Wheeler’s effort. A large number of fierce hooks and cuts brought nil runs, and almost nil contact, but entertained many of those present. At last he located the ball, and a late stream of boundaries took the score to 163, with Hill bemused but phlegmatic on 65 no.

The Green had to remove the top order quickly, but made a hash of two early catches as Bretforton advanced at six per over. Jon Lewis bowled Cross (21), and Witts (23) was well caught at cover by Rob Tyler off Joe Endicott. Though the Green continued to field keenly, and Lamb bowled Boulton (17), Paul Jones gave no real chance in his unbeaten 89 and the match was settled long before the close.
